Aspects Bird Feeders

Aspects is probably the only company that matches Droll Yankee in terms of bird feeder durability and functionality. That they believe in the quality of their products is underscored by the fact most carry lifetime warranties.

The company also is a technological innovator and boasts some pretty unique stuff. Shown to the right is their 4-perch brushed nickel sunflower tube feeder with dome and tray. Notice the beautiful workmanship of the dome and tray.

Hummingbird Feeders

The line of hummingbird feeders is my favorite product by aspects. Built-in ant moats block ants from accessing the feeder and nectar guard technology hinders flying insects. The original series consists of:

Each of these disk models carries a lifetime warranty. All are super effective and really easy to clean (you will need to clean your Hummingbird feeder). An objection many people have to disk-like hummingbird feeders is their appearance. Aspects addressed this with a new line of hummingbird feeders called the "Fancy."

As the name implies, these feeders are the "dressed up" version of their earlier cousins. I must admit, Aspects really delivers. Both the HummZinger Fancy (4-port) and Little Fancy (3-port version) beautifully combine style and function.

All the benefits of the first versions are included, but Aspects has added elegance. These are a bit more pricey, but if you're looking for function and an nice appearance, you can't beat this line.

Tube Feeders

Also, Aspects has built in a system where seed is driven to the outer edges of the tube near the bottom. Thus, birds are able to eat every seed. This helps in prevents seed from sticking inside and molding up.

Aspects has gone so far as to re-engineer their tube so that sometime in 2007, the bottom will be completely removable!!

The small tube comes in brass or brushed nickel. The medium, large and Big tube come in brass, brushed nickel or verdigris (a forest green).

Shelled Peanuts

Aspects also manufactures a superb shelled peanut feeder. These peanut silos feature a polycarbonate collar that protects birds from protruding sharp edges. They also utilize a seed diverter technology at the feeder's bottom so each peanut can be eaten. This means less "gunking up" at the bottom, a notorious problem with shelled peanuts.

Mesh Thistle Feeder

The Mesh feeder has been around for years. Use this feeder to offer thistle to the goldfinches, pine siskin, sparrow, house finch, redpoll and purple finch. Goldfinches are particularly fond of this type of feeder due to their natural capacity to cling.

The trade off?

The thistle seed in a mesh feeder is exposed to the elements. Thus, rain will cause the seed to mold if it is not eaten in a timely fashion.

If you do NOT have a ton of thistle eating birds, choose the small capacity feeder (3/4 quart). If you have quite a fewbirds, go with the 1 1/4 quart capacity feeder. They both come in brushed nickel or purple.

Thistle Tube Feeder

Speaking of thistle feeders, the Aspects thistle tube feeder series is of very high quality. As it stands, they offer a small and medium sized tube in either brass or brushed nickel.

Currently, the company uses their seed deflector and a skirt attached to the bottom to ensure that all thistle is eaten. This unique innovation helps prevent seed from "gunking up" at the bottom.

This is particularly important because thistle eating birds like the goldfinch are notorious for rejecting dirty feeders. Despite this excellent technology, I prefer the Birdquest spiral thistle feeder because the bottom is removable.

Look for an Aspects innovation this year that will boast the same technology.

Window Feeders

Aspects also boasts a series of excellent window feeders. Pictured here is their hummingbird feeder called the nectar bar. I love this feeder for its simplicity. The main bowl lifts out, allowing you to leave the frame attached to the window. As you can see, it's very effective. Though I'm not fond of the suction cup, I've never had the feeder fall. The feeder has a lifetime warranty, of course.

Other window feeders include:

The buffet (1/2quart capacity). This feeder has two seed trays, thus giving you the option of feeding two seed types.
The banquet (3/4 quart capacity). This feeder has three seed trays, thus giving you the option of feeding three seed types.
The Window cafe (3/4 quart capacity). This window feeder sports a roof, thus Seed is protected from rain.

All 3 feeders carry a lifetime warranty. Aspects states that the window cafe is this most popular window feeder. Keep in mind that experience has taught me that window feeders make excellent supplements to an already active bird feeding station, but really are not ideal for "activating a station."

Specialty Feeders

Aspects carries an outstanding tray feeder with a protective dome. This is not a unique design (Droll Yankee boasts the same feeder). However, you get great versatility with this feeder in that you can feed about anything you want.

Place mealworms in the tray, or fruit, or seed! Adjust the gap between the dome and tray and you can keep out big birdslike grackles and starlings. Again, you are protected by a lifetime warranty.

Squirrel Control Feeder

Normally, I would recommend a hopper-style squirrel proof bird feeder only if your squirrel problem is minor (meaning you have a squirrel or two).

Why?

Because squirrels learn to beat this style feeder by hanging from or standing on the top of the feeder and reaching down into the cavity where the seed is held. Thus, they bypass the control mechanism. However, Aspects has something unique.

The aspects Roller Feeder flips squirrels harmlessly to the ground by rotating. What's innovative about this is that only the outer shell spins; the inner shell housing the seed remains still. This is a very unique design that, in theory,solves the problem of the squirrel bypassing the control mechanism.

I try to test feeders prior to writing about them and I must confess that I have not tested this one. However, when speaking with backyard bird watchers who have used it, there is a universal consensus that the feeder is quite effective.

A feature that folks really like is the adjustable weight control. Not only can you control squirrels, but you may also keep heavier birds like Blue Jays and Grackles at bay.

Accessories

One final note.

Aspects provides all the typical accessories for their feeders as other manufacturers. For instance they offer excellent tube top domes for weather and squirrel domes. As with their hummingbird feeders, they offer an original or a fancy version. Trays that attach to the bottom of the feeder are also readily available. Again, standard or fancy.

All of these products are of high quality and carry life time warranties. I am particularly prone to add trays to mytube feeders as Cardinals have a tendency to reject the tube without (they've a big chest and no neck and so struggle on the perch of a tube feeder).
