The Blue Bird Feeder
Regardless of which blue bird feeder you choose, it is important that you understand placement. Most people will buy the feeder and place it right in the thick of their feeder station.
Though this may work, experience has taught me that youwill have success sooner if you place the feeder not more than 5 feet from your blue bird house.
Of course, this means the feeder will not likely be in your sight given that your box is likely a ways away. However, this placement will expedite the speed at which the bird finds the feeder.
Slowly move the blue bird feeder into view by changing its location every day by five feet so. The birds will tag along. Eventually, you'll place the feeder where you can better see the birds.
I've practiced this routine many times with great success. Now onto the feeders.
There are lots of blue bird feeders on the market. Some are successful, some are not. My suggestion is that you use one of the models listed below.
Droll Yankees
DYX1 is a versatile feeder.
Though the company touts this as a seed feeder, it's quite effective as a blue bird feeder. Because the space between the dish and dome can be adjusted, keeping away pest birds like grackles and starlings is a breeze. If blue birds migrate out of your region, convert the product to a
fruit feeder.
Of course, the company warranties the feeder for life.
Aspects
offers a similar product called the vista dome feeder. It gets the job done as well.
Of course, you'll put mealworms in these feeders. My preference is for dehydrated mealworms as they require much less work than live mealworms (no live bugs in the frig etc).
Is there a trade off? Yep... There's less nutrition in the dehydrated mealworm as the belly has been pulled. But make no mistake, put this type of mealworm in a blue bird feeder, and they'll be all over them.
Another popular bluebird feeder is the hopper style feeder. This feeder has 4 walls and a roof (which is on a hinge for easy filling). The only access for the birds is through two round hoels in the side walls.
The blue bird is on of the few birds that will brave this opening, and so you have great control with this style of feeder as well. I know of many people who have great success with this feeder style.
