The Droll Yankee Bird Feeder Family

You will be hard pressed to beat the quality of a Droll Yankee bird feeder. With a few exceptions, most of their products carry a lifetime warranty. It's one thing to carry a warranty, it's quite another to honor it. Make no mistake, Droll Yankee does.

That they believe in the quality of their products is not surprising. Most Droll Yankee bird feeders are constructed of heavy duty UV-treated polycarbonate and metal. This means no yellowing, and no cracking. These feeders are built to last.

As for function, Droll Yankee is all about technology. I've yet to encounter a feeder poorly designed by droll. What's more, the company regularly reacts to consumer feedback and works to innovate and improve their family of feeders.

Droll Yankee Tube Feeder

There are several lines of Droll Feeders in tube format. With the exception of the Bird Lovers series, which is intended for beginners and kids, they all carry lifetime warranties. In addition, there is a sunflower seed and thistle seed version of each model type.

Also, do note that the Droll Yankee line ONXY, as of this writing in April '07, has not yet been released. Expect it by summer's end to appear in retail stores. This series boasts an important technological innovation: the bottom removes for easy cleaning.

The Droll Yankee bird feeder for hummingbirds come in an eight or four port version. Droll also offers an excellent window model where you can leave the base attached to the window and take the feeder in for filling or cleaning.

Window Feeder

I'd not doing my job if I neglect to mention the Droll Yankee bird feeder for the window. Both the Observer (OWF) window feeder and the The Winner (W-1) window feeder are great products.

Why do I like them?

Droll doesn't cut corners on the suction cups--that's the first step. If one puts a lifetime warranty on a window product, then it stands to reason that the suction cups had better adhere the feeder to the window. These do. But you'd be amazed how many companies cut corners here. I've had terrible luck with Perky Pet window products because of this issue.

Anyway, these Droll Yankee bird feeders are designed in such a way that:

View of the birds is unobstructed.
Perching is easy for the birds to to a curved rim.
Dish has drainage holes.
Feeder has a sloped cover which keeps out water.
dish can hold up to 2 cups of seed!

Another great set of products by a great company.

Suet Feeders

You wouldn't think much could be done to improve the traditional suet cage. But by applying some innovative technology, Droll Yankee has done just that.

Many of you already feeding suet wake up in the morning and wonder, "hey, who took my suet feeder?"

Generally, look at this way. If a feeder, or part of one for that matter, disappears during the day, a squirrel is likely to be the culprit. However, if you wake up and it's gone, that's likely to have been a raccoon!

One exception: bears. They'll take what they want, when they want. Be careful if you have one in your backyard. Just let him have his fill. Remember, if you have a high-end feeder, you can recover it later and invoke the warranty.

Anyway, droll has designed a locking chain with a snap closure that will prevent animals from running off with your suet feeder. They also have a couple of suet feeders that come packed with a clamp that allows you to fasten it to their one inch garden pole.Very cool!

Squirrel-proof Feeders

The Droll Yankee bird feeder designed to control squirrels are some of the best on the market. Droll engineered the tube to be too long for a squirrel to hang from the top, reach down to the port and scoop out the seed.

Thus, the squirrel must slide down to the perches, which give way under his weight. These Droll Yankee bird feeders are very effective.

Cardinals typically do not like to eat from tubes due to a large chest and virtually no neck. The Yankee Whipper, however, is one of the few tube feeders from which cardinals readily eat. The curved perched is the technological innovation that permits this.

The feeder is pictured here. You can see the cardinal eating with two American goldfinches. What's missing? Squirrels, of course!

Take a look at this one to the right. This is the Yankee Dipper. The perches on this are so small that only small birds are accommodated. Again, no squirrels.

And then there is the Yankee Tipper. This feeder features a plate at the bottom rather than perches. It's collapsible, of course. More room for birds, though. A very cool innovation.

The best selling Droll Yankee squirrel proof feeder, however, is the motorized Yankee Flipper (pictured right). I think it's the entertainment value of this feeder that is so appealing to people, particularly men.

The bottom ring perch of this feeder is fueled by a rechargeable battery. A weight activated trigger causes the mechanism to spin, which in turn tosses the squirrel. It's quite entertaining!

Make no mistake, this feeder is highly effective. However, I do NOT recommend it. Way too many mechanical problems.

The motor is warrantied for only 1 year! Because Droll typically lifetimes everything, I'm left to conclude that they don't trust their own motor.

In my retail store, customers with 2, 3 and 4 year old Flippers bring them in asking for help with the motor. We do our best to repair them, but sometimes it's just not possible.

If you want a Droll Yankee squirrel proof feeder, go with one of the other three models. They're cheaper and the warranty is lifetime and covers the whole feeder.

Droll Yankee Bird Feeder Pole System

Droll Yankee bird feeders include some great modular items. Take their pole system for instance (pictured below).
Droll Yankee offers an outstanding modular pole system where you can add arms and feeders as you see fit. Take a look at these features.

You can add up to six of these arms, 3 high and 3 about mid-level.
A Droll Yankee Bird Feeder can be attached to the very top of the pole. This gives you even more versatility.
Add a pole auger for support. These tool cork-screws into the ground and had three protruding arms that rest upon the ground. You pole system will be quite secure. I have tested this system and the stability is astounding.
Not shown here is the water dish, an item which can also be attached.

This remarkably versatile Droll Yankee bird feeder pole system is a great option if you want to keep your station confined to a specific part of your yard.

Droll Yankee Bird Feeder Pole System For The Deck

A variation on this theme is the Droll Yankee bird feeder system for the deck (pictured above). The single most important innovation of this system is the clamp which will fit nearly any size deck railing. Also, the arms holding the feeders actually clamp shut. Therefore, not wind nor animals will pull these feeders from the system.

It's a GREAT innovation, especially for those of you with nighttime marauding raccoons. Without the clamp, those feeders would be on the ground, or worse, downright missing!!

Take note of the three supplemental arms half way up the pole from which the plants are hung. This would be a great set up for a hummingbird feeder, as they are very attracted to color.

If you're looking for both quality and function, then Droll Yankee bird feeders are an excellent option. You'll pay more, but the products are worth it.

I've tested many of these feeders, and without exception, these products are top of the line.
