The Mealworm Feeder
Put mealworms in a mealworm feeder and you’ll attract:
- Bluebird
- Cardinal
- Wren
- Woodpecker
- Robin
- Purple martin
What’s the appeal of mealworms to these birds?
Protein!
Mealworms are packed with nutrition. Birds instinctively know this. Thus, they are a favorite of insect eating birds (and some seed eaters as well).
You can put them out year round. In the spring, if your setting is rural, you may be visited by the bluebird and their young. Spring and summer are great season for feeding mealworms because insects are not yet readily available. In the winter, there are no insects at all. The birds tend to flock forage and so you may end up with all kinds of birds at your mealworm feeder.
These feeders can be a very simple contraption. A wooden tray with short walls to hold the worms will suffice.
However, there are fancier models available. Droll Yankee, for instance, has a feeder that is made of plastic and is covered by a dome. The distance between the dome and the tray dish can be adjusted, thus giving you some control over what birds can access the feeder. For instance, position the dome nearer the dish to keep out big birds like grackles and starlings.
You'll get the signature Droll Yankee lifetime warranty, but be advised that you will pay more for their feeder than a simple feeder.
