West Nile Virus
West Nile virus is spread by
mosquitoes
and sometimes by transfusions, transplants and mother–to-child). The mosquitoes, pick up the disease from infected birds, and in turn infect people. The best prevention is to control mosquitoes.
Get rid of mosquito breeding sites in your yard. If it rains, rid standing water from your flower pots, your tire swing, pet water and food dishes—anywhere water collects.
Animate your still bird bath with a water wiggler, dripper or mister. Change the water weekly. Remember, mosquito larvae can’t hatch in moving water. Alternatively, mosquito dunks outright destroy the larvae and are safe for pets, people and wildlife.
Use common sense. Apply mosquito spray while outside or where clothes that cover your body.
Infants and elderly are vulnerable to the harshest symptoms of the disease, so take necessary precautions.
BUT....
Remember, this disease is not at all common and many, many more people die from the common flu. Look at how small these numbers are.
As of November 2007:
- 4 people from Kentucky contracted the disease
- 14 people from New York contracted the disease
- 5 people from North Carolina contracted the disease
- 13 people from Michigan contracted the disease
- 26 people from Oregon contracted the disease
- 3 people from Florida contracted the disease
You get the idea, right? Take a breath when the media speaks of this disease as if it's rampant among humans. That's just nuts.
Remember, control mosquitoes and you control the disease. And keep feeding the birds!!
